the sentence above is racist, but if you replace black girls with white girls you get a funny 1000+…

Maybe the common white layman doesn’t understand that racism is systematic and institutional, but POC live with and experience these things daily. And when they try to tell us about this, we deny it, and we refuse to listen.

Also yeah whatever you can be hurt and upset but you can’t call it racism. It isn’t. It doesn’t matter what your feelings are about it. It’s not racism.

I don’t think that it’s even that white people don’t always want to listen.  You do, and I do, and I know plenty of other white people who would.  As much as our community has bigots, we’re not all supremacist assholes.  However, why the hell would I believe you when the only thing that comes out of your mouth is “well that’s not racism”?  In ANY argument, unless someone wants to back-up what they’ve claimed, I’m not going to automatically believe them, and I know that I’m not the only one.  I think many white people who aren’t (or at least attempt to not be) racist understand that it’s institutional in the way that it’s been worked into the system that white people have an advantage in many respects, but that doesn’t mean they’re just going to accept anything they hear on the subject.

Despite how it looks, I’m actually not completely disagreeing with you — I’m simply saying that it’s understandable why people would screw it up and use the term incorrectly, and that it’s completely understandable that they would NEVER come across the correct one — when you don’t live near that many PoC, OR when you live and go to school in a multicultural community but the PoC who live there use the term incorrectly (oh hey, that’s my experience!), it’s not really expected that you’ll come across it that often, except in a setting such as the random tumblr reblog conversation.  If you don’t want to accept this point of view, totally okay! I understand why many wouldn’t.  I can even see why this would disregarded as bullcrap because I’m white (not like it hasn’t been done before). This is just my observation from my experiences and the way I, as well as many people I know, react to things.

fuck, its finally time someone pointed this out

that’s because saying you hate white girls isn’t actually racist for some complicated but valid reasons op

I disagree.  To say that is to generalize that all white girls are like this one type of girl — why is that okay?  I refuse to think it’s okay that someone will hate me or people on my family based on the color of their skin.  And I know that’s odd coming from a white girl, and I know that some will take offense to it.  However, I’ve been judged on skin color before and I don’t think that’s fair or validated.

Yes, there have been a fuckton of bad people in history that have been white.  There have been tons of bad white people.  I don’t pretend to ignore that, and I don’t think those acts should simply be accepted and that there isn’t still change to be had in “white person”* vs PoC relations.  But if you’re going to hate me, hate me because you genuinely don’t like me for something I’ve done, not because someone you think looks like me has done something bad.

You don’t like when someone judges you based on aesthetics?  Then don’t judge others on it.

*I put this in quotes because I have my own issues with calling people white.  Or any other color, for that matter.  But that’s a whole other conversation.

ok that’s nice but it’s still not racism which was my point

it doesn’t really matter whether you disagree with this or not, there’s actual academic and real-life dialogue on the matter that has nothing to do with my opinion nor yours tbh

I won’t lie, I’ve never heard that in my life.  The only thing I’ve ever heard in terms of defending this kind of thing is that white people did things to ask for it (which I clearly have a problem with).

This ISN’T to say that I’m not willing to learn more about this particular point of view and explore it.  I’ve just never heard of it before.  And to be honest, to people who don’t know about studies done that claim this sort of thing, it really does not make all that much sense.  (Again, I’m not against learning more… it just doesn’t make sense without explanation).

i have probably reblogged a thousand posts about this topic and will likely reblog many more. you can choose to read them or you can choose to follow some POC who actually post about these things.i would take the time to explain this to you if it weren’t 2am, and i weren’t busy

i just want to add though that i have lived in a fair few very multicultural and yes multiracial communities and no one ever hated me because i was white

i am a very easy person to get along with

if my POC friends hated anyone white it was because they were assholes

also i mean i’ll also add that if someone didn’t want to associate with me or talk to me because people who look like me have hurt them all their lives, raped/ murdered their people, committed genocide against their families, i would totally be understanding about that. not everyone has to like me. the expectation that people who’ve had to deal with actual trauma should like me is really selfish.

whereas like idk more often than not if a white person doesn’t want to interact with or respect poc it’s because they’re racist

I will look out for them for sure (I wouldn’t expect you to do that for me at 2am, but the thought that you would is always appreciated).  To be honest, I’m surprised I haven’t caught them sooner.

So, I’ve tried to find some stuff on this, simply because last time I checked, racism is when you assume something about someone based on their looks/culture for the sake of those things, not for who they are and their actual experiences.  It’s for THIS reason that white people believe that ANYONE can be racist.

HOWEVER.  Upon a little internet browsing (and it’s only a little, as it’s Easter Sunday and there’s work to be done/family to tolerate/etc, so no one kill me if this isn’t enough >.>),  I’ve found ANOTHER definition, which is, in my opinion, necessary to make the argument that PoC hating on white people isn’t racist.

Common Racist Attitudes and Behaviors That Indicate A Detour or Wrong Turn into White Guilt, Denial, or Defensiveness, published by St Cloud State University gave me me this (also, note, I looked SPECIFICALLY for this issue.  I haven’t read the whole article yet, though I have done a quick skim.  I will read it more in depth later today.):

There are four points to the “Reverse Racism” section, but the first point concentrates on how PoCs are racist as well.  They counter that notion like this:

Let’s first define racism with this formula: Racism =racial prejudice + systemic, institutional power. To say people of color can be racist, denies the power imbalance inherent in racism. Certainly, people of color can be and are prejudiced against white people. That was a part of their societal conditioning. A person of color can act on prejudices to insult or hurt a white person. But there is a difference between being hurt and being oppressed. People of color, as a social group, do not have the societal, institutional power to oppress white people as a group. An individual person of color abusing a white person – while clearly wrong, (no person should be insulted, hurt, etc.) is acting out a personal racial prejudice, not racism.

I have a lot more to learn, but thus far this is what I’ve found.  Also, I’m not posting all this in a reblog for two reasons:

  1. To see if anyone has anything to add
  2. To inform

Why point number two?  Because I’m pretty sure most people don’t know about this way of looking at racism — where have they EVER taught us this?  I’ll be honest, I’ve never heard of racism being defined as something that has to be institutional.  It’s not treated as such in everyday life.  Yes, academia may have studied it… since when does the common layman know about this?  We say it’s racist because we’re not aware of this other definition — or so this is leading me to believe.  Y’all can tell me if I’m wrong on this.

Anyways, these are my thoughts up to date.  Everyone who has never heard of this in their life should definitely browse that article — it’s very interesting and explains this point of view.  My only other comment is that, racist or not, I think it’s still fair for me to get pissed off when someone just assumes something off the color of my skin, because it’s still an unfair prejudice — I had a whole rant about that point that I just deleted (because I don’t think anyone cares…), but if anyone feels like harassing me about it, go for it.
